About
Forest Explorers is Free Haven's part-time forest school program for homeschool students in grades K–5, offering hands-on history, science, applied arts, and real-world skills outdoors. It's designed to support families seeking a rich, experiential alternative to traditional classroom learning — complementary classes that can take the place of science, history, and art in a homeschool curriculum, plus a true forest school experience through Wild Explorers.
Academic Science and History classes are guided by state educational benchmarks; instruction is experiential and discussion-based, letting children explore core concepts through observation, storytelling, movement, and inquiry in a forest setting. Applied Art exposes students to a wide range of media and techniques with a process-focused approach. Wild Explorers offers a student-led forest school experience that builds outdoor awareness, confidence, and foundational wilderness skills (navigation, knot tying, shelter building, fire safety, and pre-knife skills using peelers).
Students are grouped by grades K–1, 2–3, and 4–5. Families may enroll in any combination of classes or days, from a single class per week up to a full schedule (History & Science mornings; Art & Wild Explorers or Survival afternoons), meeting Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 9:00 AM–3:00 PM for up to eight classes per week. Free Haven is a Christian forest school; parents continue teaching math and literacy at home. Enrollment is by application and a required tour/orientation.
